Gault&Millau and Knokke-Heist present the new Regional Guide “A Taste of Knokke-Heist 2023-2024”

Oct 3, 2023

The new culinary Gault&Millau guide “A Taste of Knokke-Heist 2023-2024” was officially presented on Tuesday 3 October 2023. In recent years, Knokke-Heist has established a stellar culinary reputation in Belgium and far beyond, and is now a leading light in the gastronomic arena. The municipality is open to new ideas and concepts like no other, allowing Knokke-Heist to always respond to the new (and inevitably high) expectations of the public. With its unique location in the Zwin region and beautiful hinterland, Knokke-Heist also embraces artisanal venues that offer a wonderful and nostalgic experience. People literally enjoy a taste of the good life in Knokke-Heist, as is once again highlighted by this unique guide.

Second edition in three languages!

Just like two years ago, the culinary guide was compiled through cooperation between the municipality of Knokke-Heist and Gault&Millau. The new edition is bigger than before and includes a large number of additional illustrations to better convey the atmosphere of this bustling coastal resort. A new feature of this year’s edition is the fact that it has been published in three languages. By providing German-language texts in addition to Dutch and French, we are responding to an increasingly important tourist market. Another new feature is the updated website ‘’ which also includes a handy search function. No less than 30,000 copies of the 148-page guide have been printed. All the selected venues will also receive an identifying sticker, allowing consumers to easily see which businesses have been selected for the guide.

A taste of Knokke-Heist

In recent months, Gault&Millau’s inspectors spent a great deal of time on the road in Knokke-Heist looking for the best venues in the region. Completely independently, they selected more than 150 references, including over 30 new ones, divided into 3 different categories:

-       A gastronomic selection with a Gault&Millau score and chef's hat awards.

-       A Knokke-Heist ‘Special Selection’ with various additional venues that offer great food and drinks.

-       A selection of artisanal destinations and stores such as bakers, butchers, delicatessens, fishmongers, ice cream parlours and wine shops.

The guide also includes a number of extra themes such as interviews with hospitality professionals, the markets, an editorial about the gastronomic identity of the Zwin region, the food in the local hospital (AZ Zeno) and the beach bars.

Gastronomic selection with new references and rising stars

Knokke-Heist offers top restaurants to suit every taste. Below, we list the top scorers in the new culinary guide. The highest rated restaurants in the guide are as follows: Bartholomeus (18/20), Sel Gris (17/20), Cuines, 33 (16.5/20), Il Trionfo (15.5/20), Caillou (15/20) and Escabèche (15/20).

The inspectors also discovered many new culinary references during their discovery tour of Knokke-Heist for the gastronomic Gault&Millau selection: Bablut, Dely’s, Dunas, Le P’tit Bedon, La Rigue and La Sirène.

You can also spot a few rising stars in the guide. A number of restaurants, such as Cédric and Cwart, were given a higher score by the reviewers.

Knokke-Heist ‘Special Selection’ with additional great venues

In the ‘Special Selection’ chapter, you will discover 53 additional great places to eat and drink. These range from breakfast places, lunch venues, themed restaurants and popular hotspots by Gault&Millau to bistros, brasseries, coffee bars, cocktail bars and several bar-cafés.

Artisans and delicatessens full of culinary passion

Gault&Millau also selected no fewer than 58 artisans and fabulous stores that passionately strive to achieve the very best quality for their products. Among others, this selection includes bakers and pastry chefs, chocolatiers, delis, grocers, ice cream parlours, butchers, fishmongers, cheesemongers and wine shops.
